A newly generated interface initially possesses the composition created during its formation. When surface-active molecules are present in the bulk, the interface subsequently evolves toward its equilibrium adsorption state and the measured tension changes with interfacial age.
The observed dynamic response can depend on transport from the bulk, barriers near the interface, molecular reorientation, changes in interfacial area and finite-volume effects. Dynamic surface tension therefore describes an evolving interfacial state rather than a single equilibrium value.

Dynamic surface tension describes the tension of a non-equilibrium interface whose composition continues to evolve after the interface has been formed.
The tension of an adsorption-active interface depends on its age. A meaningful dynamic measurement therefore requires a defined interfacial age and an understood method response.
